Beauty, cream and grey.

Thank you for all the lovely comments about Featherweight. Its great when knits go well!

This is the beautiful hand made obi scarf that arrived in the post from Nora this morning. It is perfect in every way, from the sewing, fabric choice, colours and person who made it. x
I will be wearing this a lot.

This is face cream, homemade! It looked and felt like meringue when I was whisking it up.

I have found lately that commercial face and body creams smell so plasticy to me. I wanted something that I knew the composition of and could taylor to suit. I found The Soap Kitchen and sort of followed a recipe which used almond oil, coconut oil, glycerine, lavender essential oil and rose hip cream. I made some salves using peppermint and lavender oils too.

They turned out really well and are so nice to use, particulary for hands and feet. I am using them everywhere at the moment but want to make a lotion too as they are quite thick. I am keeping them in the fridge and hope to have time one day to experiment further.

Bells posted recently on her shampoo free life which was really interesting. I couldn't go shampoo free as I am addicted to washing my hair every day!
But I would like to used products which are homemade or support a small business which sells similar things. I find the claims that some of the cosmetics companies make ridiculous (although have been seduced by them many times in the past) and wish that we could grow old, wrinkles and all, naturally.

I am on the hunt too for essential oil perfumes and deodorants that are as simple as possible yet effective. I find the natural deodorant route a bit scarey having been brought up in this "no-sweat" culture! So any experience/product recomendations welcome.

In the meantime I am soldiering on with the grey Cauchy socks. Its a great pattern but the yarn is hard on the hands. I had better use plenty of my new hand cream!

Wow, what a gorgeous gift - makes me almost (but not quite, hehe) want to take up sewing!

The homemade cream looks yummy, and those grey socks look great. Need to check out the pattern, etc...

OMG, Linda, just submitted that comment, then realised that it's been sent under my husband's login name. Arrrgh. Please rest assured that the comment was from me! X

everything about this post is delicious. Thumbs up for you for dipping your hand into homemade beauty products. I think it's incredible to use something homemade rather than all the commercial stuff on the market.
happy weekend!

Lucky you! what a gorgeous scarf. I love homemade face products. There is a woman who sells her stuff at the farmers market here. It is wonderful.

I've used Uncle Tom's deodorant since a teenager (a few years then LOL) and it's great. Down side though is that is is American so not good on the air miles :( Here is a link, but you can buy in Natural Food shops and sometimes Sainsburys!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toms-Natural-Deodorant-Roll-Unscented/dp/B000TBW7VA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1247994018&sr=8-4 I usually pay around £5 for it, but it usually lasts 6 months.

I can't bear most factory made cosmetics, the fragrances make me sneeze!!!!

Oh and can also recomment Dr Bronner's castille soap - but don't use it on your hair cos you'll never get the tangles out! The peppermint one is .......... errr...... envigorating! :-)

yes! Ever since the comments started coming in on my post about shampoo-free living, I've been starting to think more about other ways I can break the addition to commercial products. You're inspiring me!

That was so interesting to read, especially after reading Bell's shampoo free post the other day, I've been hoping to find a natural products supplier in this country. I've tried using Tisserand deodorant. It does smell nice, but you really need to reapply it several times a day for it to keep working, which isn't always possible for me. It also isn't an antiperspirant, so doesn't stop the sweating :(

Your scarf from Nora is lovely (but of course!). Interesting about your creams and lotions, I think that is a great idea.

Thanks for the link to the Soap Kitchen - I've been looking into all that sort of stuf as I've got the sort of skin that goes bright red and odd at the slightest thing! Plus I'm not at all convinced about the commercial stuff for washing hands, face, body etc.
